From experience: NICET certification can be the difference between winning and losing a contract bid β and it signals to Engineers, employers, Facility Managers, business owners and AHJs that you know the code, not just the panel. If you’re starting out, aim for Level II as your first major milestone.

Manufacturer training matters: Code knowledge gets you through the AHJ review β manufacturer training gets you through the job. Most major manufacturers (JCI, Honeywell, Siemens, Potter, Mircom) offer free or low-cost online modules. Take them.

Smoke detector spacing
NFPA 72 default is 30 ft. centers on a smooth ceiling. Always check for beam, sloped, or HVAC conditions that require adjustment β and confirm with the manufacturer’s listing.
Heat detector spacing
Listed spacing per manufacturer, typically 50 ft. centers. Reduce for ceiling heights above 10 ft. per NFPA 72 Table 17.6.3.5.1.
Pull station height
ADA requires the operable part between 48 in. min and 54 in. max AFF for a side-reach approach. Verify local AHJ adoption of ADA vs. local amendments.
Canned smoke & detectors
Always check the detector manufacturer’s guidance before using test aerosol. Some manufacturers warn that certain aerosols can affect detector plastics or void listings.
NAC voltage drop
Wire gauge and circuit length matter β always calculate voltage drop on NAC circuits and verify devices will operate at minimum panel output voltage under full load.
Code edition in your AHJ
Never assume the current NFPA edition applies. Verify which edition has been locally adopted β many jurisdictions are one or two cycles behind.
Panel battery sizing
NFPA 72 requires 24-hour standby plus 5 minutes of alarm (or 4 hours alarm for certain occupancies). Calculate load from the panel manual β don’t guess.
