But first we needed a fuse.
On an island in the Pacific with no auto parts store and a 30-year-old panel, finding the right fuse was going to take some creative thinking.
And now — the rest of the story.
The fire alarm system at a remote post in the Pacific had gone down.
The ITM inspection team was on site for the annual test when they noticed it — detectors turning red, and nothing happening. No alarm. No response from the panel. Just silence where there should have been sound.
They sent us photos of the troubles displayed. We walked them through some checks. They found a burnt fuse on the main motherboard. 24VDC — the main power supply for everything in a fire alarm panel — was absent. We couldn’t see any other damage. Nobody had “let the smoke out” as far as we knew.
Root cause found. Simple fix?
Except nothing about this situation was simple.
Where simple goes complicated
The post sits on an island north of Australia. Roughly 10,000 miles from our office. No fire alarm companies in the country. No trained technicians nearby who could reroute a trip to get there. The ITM team had already left. Local electricians were now the only hands available — experienced with basic electrical work, but with no fire alarm training and no familiarity with a 30-year-old Siemens MXL panel that hasn’t had parts available for fifteen years.
The building had been without fire alarm protection for nearly a week. Fire watch was underway but deemed unsustainable — not enough manpower, not enough resources, not a long-term solution. Management wanted to know what we were doing about it.
We set up a Teams call. Branch chief, two or three techs, myself. We talked through everything — what the panel was doing, what the fuse controlled, what the electricians would be capable of, what we needed from them to move forward.
After the call I drafted an email. Not a quick note — a detailed document with manual snippets, terminal strip diagrams, step-by-step troubleshooting instructions written specifically for electricians who had never touched a fire alarm system. Resistance readings across the wires. Resistance to ground. What data to give me and when.
And then, we needed a fuse
I told them to try a local auto shop. Then I remembered where they are. An island in the Pacific. There might not be an auto shop. There might be a local mechanic with a box of odds and ends somewhere.
But then it hit me.
Go to a boat shop.
Not sure where, but they found one. Not a 24-volt fuse — but the right amperage. Close enough to work until the proper parts arrived. I told them to use it.
“Until that fuse went in and they told me they had 24 volts back, I had no idea if any of this was going to work.”
If the fuse didn’t solve it, we had nothing. If the panel had sustained further damage, we had nothing. If the electricians couldn’t follow the troubleshooting steps, we had nothing.
The moment I knew
Then the first email reply came back.
Clean meter readings. We could see the EOLs. Accurate data. Exactly what I had asked for — and hoped for.
That’s when I knew. These guys know how to read a meter. They know how to follow directions. We’re going to get this back. Until then, I had no idea. The first clean data reply was the moment the outcome became certain — not when the panel came back online, but when the people on the other end proved they could execute the steps.
Step by step. Building by building. Detectors first — activate a device, confirm the panel receives the alarm. Notification wiring next — activate a device, bells ring, strobes flash. Then move to the next building and do it again. Every building on that panel brought back online the same way, one at a time, until the system was fully restored.
What it took
A 30-year-old panel. An island in the Pacific. Electricians who had never touched fire alarm equipment. A fuse from a boat shop.
The building had fire alarm protection again.
I use a phrase in this field that I’ve said more times than I can count: “Technology is great when it works.” What this job reminded me is that the technology is only as good as the people behind it — the ones 10,000 miles away drafting step-by-step instructions at midnight, and the ones on the ground following those instructions with a borrowed fuse and a multimeter, in a country where nobody in the industry had ever set foot.
Great job by a local crew that wasn’t trained in fire alarm. Basic electronics. Basic electrical procedures. And the willingness to follow a detailed set of instructions from people they had never met.
That’s the job. Sometimes that’s exactly what the job looks like.
